Preseason game #3 Edmonton Oilers (1-1) @ Vancouver Canucks (2-1) – game recap

Brandon Sutter scored a pair of goals in a 4-2 come from behind victory over the Oilers

After two thrilling 3rd period comebacks last night, one which resulted in a win and one that feel just short, the Canucks were right back at it taking on an Edmonton Oilers team that’s looking for better fortunes. The Canucks made their first cuts this morning, including Mitch Eliot, who scored the first goal of the preseason for the Canucks last night, Jett Woo and Jake Kielly, who will likely start in the ECHL. Woo, Ethan Keppen, Carson Focht and Arturs Silovs were all returned to their respective junior teams. Carter Bancks, Dillon Blujus, Carter Camper, Zach Frye, Tanner Sorenson, Wacey Hamilton, Stefan Leblanc, Matt Petgrave, Dylan Sadowy, Dyson Stevenson and Aaron Thow will all report to Utica. William Warm was released completely. Zane McIntyre and Thatcher Demko were the goalies tonight. Brandon Sutter, Alex Edler, Tanner Peason, Elias Petterson, Quinn Hughes, and Michael Ferland all saw their first preseason action tonight Could the Canucks make it wins on consecutive days? Here is tonight’s game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Canucks opened the scoring 16:19 into the game as Brandon Sutter scored on a backhand deke, beating Oilers goalie Shane Starrett upstairs on a penalty shot
  • The Oilers tied the game just over 13 minutes into the 2nd period as Tomas Jurco was johnny on the spot to snap a rebound by Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko
  • The Oilers took the lead almost 4 minutes into the 3rd period Patrick Russell snapped a shot off the post and in past  Demko
  • Almost 7 minutes later, the Canucks tied the game as Elias Pettersson was johnny on the spot on the big, fat, juicy rebound coughed up by Starrett
  • Just over a minute later, Sutter tipper an Alex Edler point shot by Starrett
  • Just under eight and a half minutes later, Tanner Pearson stuffed the puck into the empty net
  • Thatcher Demko stopped 32 of 34 shots
  • Final score: Canucks 4 Oilers 2

My Take:

  • Thatcher Demko was under siege all night, but he stood tall with a big 32 save effort to keep his team in it
  • Brandon Sutter had a solid first game back after missing the final month of the season with sports hernia surgery. He scored a pair of goals tonight, including the game-winner. He also had two takeaways
  • Tyler Myers also made a good first impression with his new team, dishing out 2 hits, blocking 6 shots and stealing the puck once and coughing it up once
  • While the Canucks power play was 0-2, there was good movement in the offensive zone and the PP unit generated 5 shots
  • The penalty killing unit also did a good job, keeping the Oilers off the scoreboard and limiting their PP unit to 2 shots
  • The Oilers dominated the faceoff circle, winning 72% of the draws tonight. Michael Ferland and Landon Ferraro were the best Canucks, winning half the draws they took
  • Alex Biega also had himself a nice night. He was +2 with 3 shots on goal, 2 hits and 3 blocked shots. He’s making a good early impression as he battles for one of the last defensive spots
  • Up next, the Canucks head to Edmonton for a rematch. Expect Jacob Markstrom to see his first preseason action. Brock Boeser may be held back to give him an extra practice with the team. There could be early injury concern with Olli Joulevi and his knee. The team is showing an abundance of caution with the prospect defenseman
