Game #23 – Vancouver Canucks (11-8-4) @ Nashville Predators (9-9-3) – game recap

After a thorough beat down in Dallas two nights ago, the Canucks were looking to get things back on track facing a Nashville Predators team they beat 8 days ago in Vancouver. Both teams came into this one with just one win in their past 8 games. A couple of lineup changes. Loui Eriksson and Sven Baertschi were healthy scratches with Tyler Graovac and Zack MacEwen were in the lineup. Tyler Myers and Troy Stetcher swapped defensive partners. Jacob Markstrom was back in net after a rough outing Tuesday in Dallas. Could the Canucks snap the three game losing streak? Here is tonight’s game recap.

Game Highlights:

  • The Predators opened the scoring just under eight minutes into the game as Ryan Johanssen got behind the Canucks defense and beat Jacob Markstrom with a move to the backhand
  • Almost eight and a half minutes later, an Elias Pettersson slap pass deflected in off a Preds defender for a PP marker
  • Two minutes later, Tyler Graovac tipped home an Alex Edler point shot for a PP marker
  • The Preds tied the game just under five minutes into the 2nd period as the Preds took advantage of Tanner Pearson’s stick breaking. Calle Jarnkrok hammered a one-timer by Markstrom for a PP marker
  • Just over two minutes later, JT Miller snapped a shot that deflected off a Preds defender’s stick for a PP marker
  • Just under eleven minutes later, Brock Boeser got just enough on the puck to squeak it over the goal line for a PP marker
  • Twenty-seven seconds later, Bo Horvat was johnny on the spot to stuff a rebound past Pekka Rinne for a PP marker
  • The Predators got one back eigght and a half minutes into the 3rd period  as Matt Duchene tipped in a point shot by Jarnkrok
  • The Canucks added an empty-netter with just over two minutes left as Pearson wheeled and fired the puck the length of the ice from the corner
  • Jacob Markstrom stopped 44/47 shots
  • Final score: Canucks 6 Predators 3

My Take:

  • Now this was a statement game. After arguably their worst game of the season two nights ago, the Canucks played their best. After surrendering the first goal yet again, the Canucks scored twice late in the 1st to take the lead into the intermission. They scored three more times in the 2nd period and held on in the 3rd when Nashville came out hard
  • Jacob Markstrom had a huge game, stopping 44 shots. He was sharp tonight and had decent rebound control. None of the goals were his fault
  • The Canucks power play could do no wrong tonight, striking 5 times in 6 opportunities. Hopefully tonight’s performance gives them confidence for the rest of the road trip.
  • Elias Petterson (1G 2A) and Qunn Hughes (3A) had 3 point nights
  • The Canucks were also much better in the faceoff circle, winning 51% of the draws, led by Josh Leivo, who won every draw he took.Adam Gaudette  (71% success rate) and Bo Horvat (60% success rate) also had good nights in the faceoff circle
  • The Canucks had 5 hits. Brock Boeser, Leivo, Tyler Graovac, Zack MacEwen and Adam Gaudette, each had one hit
  • The Canucks blocked 22 shots, led by Alex Edler, who had 7 blocked shots
  • Up next, the Canucks face the Washington Capitals in a matinee Saturday. Puck drop is 10AM in Vancouver. Expect the same lineup as tonight Saturday, except Thatcher Demko may be in goal with a short turnaround
