Canucks ‘Chris-cross’ defenceman while Edler recovers from concussion

“It is a problem for anyone to engage in their off facet. I think he’s handling it all right.”

In a league in which defencemen are nearly usually on the same facet as their hand energy — right pictures engage in the right facet, remaining pictures engage in the remaining facet — it’s really uncommon to see a right-handed shooter taking part in on the remaining.

Lefties switching to the right is a little something we witness from time to time. But right-handed shooters taking part in on the remaining? Not incredibly typical.

Chris Tanev is now a few game titles into his NHL job as a remaining-facet defenceman, a shift pressured by the freak concussion sustained by Alex Edler very last Monday in Philadelphia.

It is a situation Tanev has hardly ever been in, but the determination to set him in this spot, as opposed to inquiring a single of the other right-handed shooters — Erik Gudbranson, Troy Stecher or Alex Biega — to change sides, or to insert slight-league contact-up Guillaume Brisebois, a remaining-handed shooter, speaks to the perception mentor Travis Environmentally friendly has in Tanev.

“It’s a problem for anyone to engage in their off facet,” Environmentally friendly explained Saturday right after a brisk early morning skate at Rogers Arena in front of some season ticket holders. “I think he’s handling it all right.”

Tanev admitted it’s a tough adjustment: on leading of owning your adhere on the inside of of the ice as opposed to the outside the house, the angles of defending are reverse to what he’s been wired to do for most of his lifetime.

“I felt better very last sport,” he explained, referring to Thursday’s tilt versus the Chicago Blackhawks. “It’s likely to be a method. I’ve not performed it in a though … the way you see the sport is fully distinct.”

Tanev has been partnered with Erik Gudbranson. The pair killed some penalties alongside one another, but as right-hand pictures, it’s a uncommon instant the two are on the ice alongside one another.

“First time we have definitely performed alongside one another,” Tanev explained. “It’s been fantastic. Definitely he’s a large gentleman, skates properly and is actual physical. He results in a great deal of loose pucks, helps make it easy to decide on up pucks and crack them out.”

For his element, Gudbranson explained he’s been impressed by his new companion.

“He’s a fantastic participant, a grizzled vet now he can deal with it,” he explained.

Gudbranson has some expertise taking part in on the remaining — he did it a bit in junior — but admitted he’s satisfied to keep on the right.

“For certain, it’s better on your have facet,” he explained. “The minor plays, taking part in the puck powering the net, owning to operate cross physique, it normally takes an added next when you’re on the other facet.

“I still did conclusion up there (on the remaining) a couple times (versus Chicago). We talked about it, basically if we get out on the ice and we start out reverse, we’ll keep there.”

Provided that Alex Edler is possible out of the lineup until eventually at least Monday in his recovery, it’s a changeover Tanev will have to pursue for at least one more sport or two.
